Six units at The Gant were left “currently uninhabitable” following a fire early Tuesday morning.
According to a release from the Aspen Fire Protection District, firefighters were dispatched at 5:14 a.m. to a reported structure fire at 610 S. West End St. The release says the first-arriving unit reported a three-story, multifamily condo complex with smoke showing.
Responders contained the fire to the chimney chase and prevented the spread to adjacent units. The cause of the fire will be investigated by AFPD’s fire marshals.
The release says there were no injuries. Six condo units experienced damage from fire, smoke and water. Operations at The Gant “should not be impacted beyond those contained units,” the release adds.
Two engines and three command vehicles responded, with Aspen Ambulance District providing a unit and mutual aid resources from Roaring Fork Fire Rescue and the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District. Aspen Police Department and Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office also assisted. In total, 38 personnel worked the incident, including a “strong volunteer response,” the release states.
Crews were still on scene around 11 a.m. and were expected to be there for several more hours. South West End Street and Ute Avenue were closed.
A statement from Donnie Lee, longtime general manager of The Gant, says that first and foremost, he was "relieved to report that everyone is safe from the fire this morning.”
Lee added: “I would like to extend our utmost gratitude to our team for acting swiftly and responsibly to assist our guests, owners and the fire department. Your dedication and professionalism under such circumstances is truly commendable. Furthermore, we are incredibly thankful for the first responders who immediately responded to the incident with precision, care and bravery and promptly contained and extinguished the fire while ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone on site. At this time, we are actively communicating to our guests and owners as updates become available.”
